Picture of The Corstorphine Sycamore

Corstorphine Sycamore

Location: Corstorphine Kirk, Corstorphine High Street. (NT 200 727)
Species: Corstorphine Sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus 'Corstorphinense')
Access: Churchyard is open to the public.

A descendant of one of Edinburgh's most famous trees, The Corstorphine Sycamore. This fine mature specimen with its distinctive early flush of yellow foliage, takes its name from the Edinburgh suburb where it first originated. The original tree, despite being almost destroyed in the Boxing Day gale of 1998 still survives and can be found at the corner of North Saughton Road and Dovecot Road, within the wall of South Lodge. This is a tree with a uniquely Scottish pedigree and which was to become a widely planted variety throughout the UK and beyond.
